PINNAWALA ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE (TOURS NO 08)

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO);  just as the name suggests holds a unique disposition in the ex-situ animal care. It’s success and fame has travelled not just within the country but throughout the world to an extent where Pinnawala synonymous with the Sri Lankan Elephant.

Currently being a home to more than 90 elephants the concept was actualized by the late Hon. Minister Lakshman Kalugalle on the 16^th of February 1975.

                                       

 Pinnawala at that time was a very remote area with lush coconut plantations and most importantly an area where the availability of mahouts was not lacking. Also the immense amount of water required by the elephants is supplemented with the availability of “Ma oya” river running close by.

In this particular elephant orphanage, you can feed baby elephants and elder elephants, ride with elephants back, and give them fruits they eat, can watch how they play with other elephants, and give baby elephant’s milk and so much funny activities with elephants.

SIGIRIYA ROCK FORTRESS AND DABULLA CAVE TEMPLE (TOURS NO 07)

From your hotel, we continue our journey to Sigirya. On the way make your first stop at Dambulla. We visit one of the the biggest vegetables market in Sri Lanka. Sightseeing the city and proceed to the Dambulla Caves. Dating back to the 1st century BC, this is the most impressive cave temple in Asia. It has five caves under a vast overhanging rock, carved with a drip line to keep the interiors dry. Inside the caves, the ceilings are painted with intricate patterns of religious images following the contours of the rock.

There are images of the Lord Buddha and bodhisattvas, as well as various gods and goddesses. There after proceed to Sigiriya which is a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site. Translated as ‘Lion Rock' into English, the name of the monument indicates the way in which visitors used to begin their final ascent to the top – through the open jaws and throat (‘giriya') of a lion (‘sinha'). Unfortunately, the only remains of this lion figure are the gigantic paws, sculpted into the side of the rock. The topography of the area is flat except for the massive rock outcrop of the fortress itself. The unusual rock is particularly interesting due to its flat top (nearly an acre in size), that was used in its entirety to build King Kasyapa's fortress complex, still evident by the presence of the extensive ruins.We start and climbing the rock. After we are back from the top of the rock we drive to the Elephant riding place. You can decide to take a ride on a elephant through the jungle.
